March 12 - NTA COVID-19 Update

Updated: Mar 15, 2020

You just received a phone call from David Fleishman announcing that the Newton Public Schools will be closing tomorrow, for all of next week, and possibly longer. Carolyn Campo forwarded his letter to the parent community. I believe that David has made the correct decision for the Newton Public Schools. I have heard growing concern from members that remaining in school was putting you and your students at unnecessary risk. The public health experts recommendations all point in the same direct: to prevent the spread of the virus, closing public schools is necessary. I am sure this was not an easy decision, but it is the safest decision.  It might go without saying, but we will also cancel any NTA meetings scheduled while school is closed. The NTA will continue to work with the administration to iron out the details of a Memorandum of Agreement on a number of issues that must be bargained. But rest assured that all NTA members will continue to receive their full pay and benefits as long as the schools are closed. David and his team have given us full assurance that this is their intent.  Chris and I will be available, so please reach out for any assistance you may need. Take care of yourself over the next week (or weeks). We will keep you up to date on any unfolding news.

Be well, Mike
