Support Newton Teachers Association Endorsed Candidates for School Committee
I don't think any of us have forgotten how difficult the last contract campaign was, both the strike, and all that led up to the strike. There are many things we can do to avoid that scenario in the future. But there is one thing we can do right now:
If you live in Newton, vote on November 4 for the NTA endorsed school committee candidates Jenna Miara (Ward 5), Mali Brodt (Ward 6), and Jim Murphy (Ward 8). Encourage your friends and neighbors to vote for them as well!Â
Polls across the City will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Click here to find your polling location. Click here to find your voting status.
This is our opportunity to elect a School Committee that (gasp!) actually has professional expertise and experience in schools!
Of course, there are anti-union voices in the community who are putting a negative spin on our endorsement, claiming that an NTA endorsement compromises these three candidates.Â
Those same voices also support the Laredo/Brezski slate of endorsed candidates. What, really, is this slate and how did it come about? It is the old guard city political establishment, with its money and influence, digging in to make sure that it has a school committee that will back their anti-union, austerity, top down management agenda.
In other words, the same people who tried to break our union in 2022-2024 are at it again. And look where that got us last time!
To be clear, we DO NOT expect Jenna Miara, Mali Brodt, or Jim Murphy to rubber stamp NTA positions. But we do expect that they will:
recognize, respect, and engage in dialogue with us;
be transparent and honest;
understand the crucial role of educators in our schools;
have a vision for building trust and collaboration.
If you live in Newton, vote for NTA endorsed candidates Jenna Miara, Mali Brodt, and Jim Murphy on November 4th!
Retirement PlusÂ
Ok, I am going to try one more time to get the right link in this email!
Since the Retirement Plus bill failed to pass in the state senate last spring, the process has begun again. It passed in the House last year, and will most likely pass there again. So, once again we must advocate with our state senators to pass this bill. Please click here to send a letter! This legislation is impactful for thousands of Massachusetts educators approaching retirement.

In solidarity,
Â
